Thinking About Switching from Amazon UK to Amazon Ireland? Here's What to Know

You're not alone. With the launch of Amazon Ireland, many Irish shoppers wonder if it’s worth making the move. From delivery speeds to product availability, this guide breaks down everything before you switch—and how it might change your shopping habits.

What Happens When I Switch Over to Amazon Ireland?

Switch Decision, yes or no!

If you are considering moving your regular Amazon account or Prime membership from Amazon UK to Amazon Ireland, you should read this blog post.

When you switch to the Irish site from your UK account dashboard, your new Irish account replaces your UK account. Don't worry, your Amazon UK account remains as is, so you can still use it. Just remember, you will have to log back into your UK account on the UK website with the same email and password you used before.

To avoid confusion, log in through a different browser. Both homepages look very similar. If you're unsure about which site you are using, check the Amazon logo at the top left; it will have either (.ie) or (.co.uk). The search bar will have the same information.

Be aware that your UK Prime benefits will not be available on your UK account after switching your Prime membership. You will also be responsible for any shipping fees from the UK site if you choose to continue shopping there.

Understanding Your Prime Benefits

It's been a while since I was a typical basic UK account holder, so I was surprised to see that Amazon UK offers free shipping without a Prime membership if you spend over a certain amount. This could help ease any frustrations if you decide to continue purchasing from the UK website.

However, keep in mind that you will lose access to Prime Deals on the UK site once you switch. If you anticipate still buying frequently from the UK site, consider signing up for a new UK Prime account. Just remember that this means two Prime accounts and two separate payments. If you see value in doing it this way, go ahead.

I Moved to Amazon Ireland

I moved from Amazon UK to Amazon Ireland and it was easy
Moving over was so easy!

After some initial hesitation, I took the plunge and moved my Prime account to the Irish site. I was concerned that my Affiliate details might get deleted or altered. Thankfully, they remained intact, and the transition was smooth and easy.

I tested the waters by moving a family member's account first to see if it was complicated or if Prime Video would be affected. It wasn't! The process took just a couple of clicks. Absolutely no hassle.

My only issue was the lack of information regarding Amazon Affiliates switching accounts. However, I’ve added a section covering that below.

After I moved, I checked my UK account from a different browser to ensure everything was still there. It was unaffected, minus the Prime membership, of course. If you're in the same situation, I hope this section provides peace of mind.

I also verified that Prime Video worked on my devices without needing to log in again; everything functioned as before. Well done, Amazon!

I compared a few previously purchased products between the two sites, and yes, some prices were slightly higher on the Irish site. However, be mindful that the UK checkout often increases prices due to tariffs or customs duties. This is a result of Brexit, not a "Paddy Tax" as some are calling it. The good news is that there are no exchange rates on the Irish site.

Any Differences Between Amazon UK and Amazon Ireland?

I've noticed that product availability on the Irish site isn't as broad as the UK site—at least for now. Some products are coming from Europe or the UK. This situation is expected given the launch scale, especially for a smaller market like Ireland.

I consider this a natural teething period as Amazon begins to understand local demand and adjust accordingly. While past data from Irish customers using the UK site will help guide them, optimizing stock and logistics for a new regional site is no small task. It could take some time, but I expect progress as the platform evolves.

Independent sellers may also be slow to add products. They could adjust their UK listings but changing or adding new listings takes time. Some sellers use Amazon to fulfill their products, and that may also require time to shift products over. I assume there isn't significant space in the Amazon fulfillment center for major shifts.

Kindle titles aren't available on the Irish site at this time. I don't know if that will change. However, you can still buy through the UK site without any shipping issues using your old account.

Price Differences Between Amazon Ireland and Amazon UK

I'm a big fan of movies and recently saved some new titles on Amazon Ireland. I noted that the prices fluctuated from just under €7 to just over €10 for a few titles within a week. After a few days, the prices dropped a bit, and I made my purchase. These prices seem to fluctuate daily.

Many businesses change their prices daily. As a customer, it’s up to you to catch the best deals. If you spot something you're interested in, add it to a list in your account, and purchase when the price looks right. While not all products will fluctuate like this, it doesn't hurt to aim for a good deal. I checked the same titles on the UK site and found them slightly cheaper. Keep in mind that added duties and shipping costs might bring them to a comparable price.

How Does Switching to Amazon Ireland Affect Amazon Affiliates?

Your UK Affiliate account will remain unaffected. Everything stays the same, but you now have a separate Irish account. If you want to become an Affiliate on the Irish site, you need to apply again. The good news? It's a quick and easy process—I’ve already signed up.

Using Both UK and Irish Amazon Websites

I still use both accounts for price referencing, but I’m actively ordering from the Irish website. My UK Affiliate account is something I check daily, hoping someone utilized one of my links. For now, I suggest using both accounts like I do. It provides the best of both worlds and peace of mind.

Ads are Going Soon

I used to run ads on my website, but they slowed the site down and annoyed visitors. I’ve now removed them in favor of the 'Buy Me a Coffee?' button.

If you didn't use the links in this post but found it interesting, you could express your appreciation using the 'Buy Me a Coffee' link below. There’s no pressure; every bit counts and is always appreciated! My business isn’t a huge moneymaker, so I rely on supplementary income where I can. Thank you!
