Acrylic and Hardwood Pen Blanks for Woodturning
There is something very satisfying about turning a pen blank into a finished pen. A small piece of acrylic or hardwood can become a useful, personal and long-lasting handmade item.
I stock a small range of pen blanks for woodturners, including colourful Chestnut Products acrylic pen blanks and selected hardwood pen blanks prepared for small turning projects. These blanks are suitable for pen turning, keyrings, small handles, decorative spindle work and other compact woodturning projects.
The acrylic blanks are ready-made Chestnut Products blanks, while the hardwood blanks are cut in small batches from suitable wood in my own workshop in Tralee, Co. Kerry. Stock changes over time, especially with the hardwood blanks, as I only prepare them when suitable material is available.
Chestnut Acrylic Pen Blanks
Chestnut Products acrylic pen blanks are a good choice when you want strong colour, bold patterns and a more modern finished look. Acrylic blanks are popular for handmade pens because they can produce a bright, polished finish that stands out from natural wood.
These blanks are useful for pen turning, small gifts and other compact projects where colour is part of the design. They are stocked in small quantities and dispatched from Ireland.
Hardwood Pen Blanks
Hardwood pen blanks give a very different result to acrylic. Instead of bright colour and pattern, the appeal is in the natural grain, warmth and character of the wood itself.
My hardwood pen blanks are cut in small batches from suitable pieces of wood in my own workshop. I do not mass-produce them, and I do not always have every type in stock. When hardwood blanks are available on this page, they are already prepared, listed and ready to order.
I make every reasonable effort to select sound, usable blanks, but as with all natural wood, small variations, marks or hidden character can sometimes appear when the blank is cut or turned. I allow a little extra size where possible so there is room for trimming, drilling and adjustment.
Choosing the Right Pen Blank
Acrylic and hardwood blanks both have their place in pen turning.
Acrylic blanks are often chosen when you want colour, contrast and a glossy modern finish. They can be ideal for pens that are meant to look bright, striking or a little different.
Hardwood blanks are better suited to a more traditional handmade look. Each piece of wood has its own grain and character, so no two finished pens will be exactly the same.
If you are making a gift, acrylic can work well for someone who likes colour and personality, while hardwood can be a lovely choice for a more natural or classic pen.
From Pen Blank to Finished Pen
A good pen blank is only the starting point. To get the best from your project, it helps to use sharp tools, careful sanding and a suitable finish.

Handmade Pens as Gifts
A handcrafted pen can make a thoughtful gift for birthdays, retirements, graduations, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or Christmas. Whether made from Irish hardwood or a colourful acrylic blank, a well-turned pen is practical, personal and made to be kept.
