A Little More About My Irish Wood Pens

A handmade wooden pen is one of those gifts that can be both practical and personal. It can sit on a desk, be used every day, or be kept as a reminder of a special occasion. Unlike a mass-produced pen, each one has its own grain pattern, weight, colour, and feel in the hand.

Price Change on my Mid-Tier Pens

I’ve made a small change to how my mid-tier handmade pens are priced. Previously, some pens automatically included a premium gift box, which meant every customer was paying for the most expensive presentation option whether they wanted it or not. I’ve now changed that.

My pens will come with a simple felt presentation sleeve as standard, while gift boxes are available separately as optional upgrades.

This means the starting price of these pens has come down, and you can now decide whether you want the basic sleeve, a standard gift box or a premium presentation box. It gives you more choice and means you only pay for the presentation you actually want.

My Pen Finish

The finish is an important part of that feel for me. After experimenting with different options, including high-gloss lacquer, I found that I preferred a quality oil finish. Lacquer can create a brighter shine, but to me it can also make the wood feel more like a coated surface. The oil finish leaves the pens silky smooth, brings out the grain and colour, and allows them to retain the natural look and feel of real wood rather than disguising it beneath a heavier surface finish.

I am still developing this range and experimenting with shapes, fittings, presentation, and price points. My aim is to offer three clear options over time: budget, mid-range, and luxury, so there is a suitable choice whether you want a simple Irish-made gift or something more refined for a special occasion.

Some pens may be understated and practical, while others will feature more distinctive wood, upgraded fittings, or a more polished presentation. As the range grows, the selection may change, but the idea stays the same: useful, handmade pieces with a strong connection to Irish wood and traditional woodturning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What presentation does my pen come with?

Each pen comes with a very simple felt presentation sleeve as standard. This keeps the basic price of the pen lower while still giving you something suitable for storing or presenting it.

Are gift boxes included with the pens?

Not unless the individual pen listing specifically says so. I now offer gift boxes separately as optional upgrades, allowing you to choose the presentation you want rather than automatically paying for the most expensive box.

What gift box options are available?

I offer several presentation options, from a simple black gift box through to premium boxes. These are sold separately and can be added to your order along with your chosen pen.

The felt sleeve supplied with the pen will still be included when you purchase a gift box.

Can I buy a gift box without buying a pen?

Yes. My pen pouches and gift boxes can also be purchased separately, making them useful if you already have a pen that you would like to present as a gift.

Can the ink be replaced when it runs out?

Yes. My refillable pens are designed so that the ink refill can be replaced rather than disposing of the pen.

Which replacement refill do I need?

Some of my pens use a G2 M1.0 ballpoint refill, available from me in either black or blue ink.

Will my pen look exactly like the one in the photograph?

Where the actual pen is pictured in an individual listing, that is the pen you will receive.

Natural wood varies considerably in grain, colour and markings, however, so no two handmade wooden pens will ever look exactly alike.

Are the pens handmade?

Yes. I turn and finish the wooden components of my pens individually in my workshop in Tralee, Co. Kerry. The metal pen mechanisms and components are commercially manufactured, while the wooden body is individually turned and finished by me.
