Choosing the Right Woodturning Tools and Supplies

A good woodturning setup does not need to include every tool or accessory available. For most woodturners, a smaller selection of dependable tools, suitable abrasives and proven finishes will provide better results than a large collection of equipment that is rarely used.

Beginners should concentrate on the tools needed for the work they intend to do, while more experienced woodturners may be looking to improve sharpening, sanding or finishing. The products listed on this page have been selected to cover those practical workshop needs without adding unnecessary complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What woodturning tools should a beginner buy first?

Most beginners are better served by a small selection of individual tools rather than a large boxed set. The right starting tools will depend on whether you intend to turn bowls, spindle projects or a mixture of both.

Do new woodturning tools need to be sharpened?

Most new woodturning tools will benefit from sharpening before use. Factory grinds are not always ready for accurate turning and may need to be refined or reshaped to suit the user.

Which woodturning finish should I use?

The best finish depends on the project and how it will be used. Decorative items, bowls and frequently handled pieces may each require a different finish, so there is no single product that suits every job. Hampshire Sheen have many good finishes that I currently use and are definitely worth checking out while stocks last.

Do you stock these products in Ireland?

Yes. Everything shown is stocked at my storeroom in Tralee, County Kerry, and is ready to ship. I do not use dropshipping suppliers.

Are these the same tools and supplies you use during tuition?

Many of the tools, abrasives and workshop products shown here are used in my own work and during woodturning tuition. This allows students to see how they perform in a real workshop setting.
