This is what I use to colour my Spinning Tops with great effect!
 
Tip for marking wood; slow the lathe down to between 300-500 rpm and engage the tip lightly keeping your hand as steady as you can.  Go over your line again to make the colour as dark as you like. Always turn the pen when re-engageing as the constant abrasion pushes the tip out of true. 
 
Be Careful, the ink may blot out if over-applied.  Allow the ink to dry for 24hrs before applying Danish Oil or any liquid finish. Just dab the oil on after 24hrs, leave to soak in and then touch a dry tissue to remove excess. Wiping will run the colours.
 
A wipe on product will cause the colours to run and blur in the same way.
