American Steamed Beech Kiln-Dried Bowl Blank – Square

Approx. 203mm x 203mm x 75mm

Approx. 8" x 8" x 3"

Sold as: Single blank

This is a kiln-dried American Steamed Beech bowl blank, supplied square and end grain sealed.

Beech is a medium-strength hardwood and is a very useful wood for new woodturners. It is firm enough to give proper feedback from the tools, but not so difficult that it becomes frustrating to practise on. It is a good choice for learning bowl turning, refining tool control and making practical or decorative turned pieces.

This 8" x 8" x 3" size is a useful starting point for small bowls, shallow dishes and practice bowl turning. Your finished bowl will be smaller than the blank once it has been rounded, shaped, sanded and finished.

Suitable Projects

This size is suitable for bowl turning projects such as:

● Small bowls
● Shallow dishes
● Practice bowl turning
● Small decorative bowls
● Form and shape practice
● Learning tool control on faceplate or chuck work

Supplied square, the blank gives you some flexibility with how you mount and orient the wood before turning.

Square Bowl Blank

These bowl blanks are supplied square rather than pre-rounded.

I prefer to supply them this way because it gives you more choice when deciding how to position the blank. You can check the grain, marks and general appearance before deciding where the centre should be.

Some turners also prefer square blanks because they can adjust the orientation slightly before rounding the piece on the lathe.

Rough Sawn Finish and Natural Variation

Please note that these blanks are rough sawn. They may show saw marks, uneven surfaces, natural marks or slight variation in size from the original cutting.

Many surface marks should turn away once the blank is rounded and shaped on the lathe, but natural markings can vary from piece to piece.

These are not planed or polished pieces of wood. They are practical woodturning bowl blanks, ready to be mounted, rounded and turned.

As with all real wood, grain, colour and markings will vary from blank to blank.

Why I Supply These Blanks

One of the hardest things about starting woodturning is finding suitable wood to practise on. Not everyone has access to dry hardwood, and buying full boards or larger pieces is not always practical.

For that reason, I supply a small range of hardwood blanks that are already cut into useful sizes for woodturners. There is quite a bit of work involved in buying, cutting, sorting, sealing and storing these blanks, but they are useful for beginners and hobby turners who want wood they can actually use.

Bowl blanks are especially awkward for many beginners to source, because they are heavier, bulkier and usually more expensive than small spindle blanks.

Useful for Beginners and Woodturning Students

These blanks are especially useful if you are new to woodturning and do not yet have an easy source of suitable hardwood.

A lot of beginners struggle to find dry hardwood in small, manageable sizes. Buying full boards can be expensive, awkward to transport and wasteful if you only want to practise or make a few projects.

As a woodturner who also teaches beginners, I cut and supply these blanks in practical sizes so that hobby turners, students and anyone starting out can get straight to the turning rather than spending time trying to source suitable wood.

This 8" x 8" x 3" blank is a manageable size for learning the basics of bowl turning without starting with something too large or intimidating.

End Grain Sealed

This wood is kiln dried. After cutting, I seal the end grain with PVA glue to help reduce moisture movement back in or out through the exposed ends.

This helps keep the blank more stable while it is stored, although as with all real wood, some natural movement can still happen over time, especially if blanks are stored in changing temperatures or humidity.

Weight and Shipping

Each blank weighs approximately 3.4kg.

Orders of bowl blanks should be kept under 25kg maximum to keep the parcel weight manageable and reduce the risk of shipping damage.

A maximum of 7 blanks may fit within the weight limit, but I recommend ordering 6 or fewer for better packaging and safer shipping.

Collection is also available and may be the best option if you are buying several bowl blanks or heavier pieces.

More wood may be available than is currently listed online.

Rounding Option

These blanks are normally sold square.

If you have difficulty rounding square bowl blanks yourself, contact me before ordering and I may be able to rough round them for you. This depends on time available and may delay dispatch.

Storage Tip for Woodturners

Protect your blanks as soon as they arrive, especially if you are not turning them straight away.

A simple method is to place each blank in a brown paper bag and wrap the excess paper around it to slow down airflow. Keep air gaps around the bag using stickers, small spacers or wire rack shelving.

Wood moves, even when it is kiln dried. Careful storage can help reduce the risk of movement or cracking before you are ready to turn the blank.

If you round a blank but do not turn it the same day, it is still worth storing it carefully until you are ready to continue.

Please Note

The photos show an example of the type of blank available. They are not the exact pieces you will receive, but your blank will be of the same general type, size and quality.

Measurements are approximate, and your finished bowl will be smaller than the original blank.
