Refresher Woodturning Lesson for One Person
 
🧰 Who Is This Session For?
Already tried woodturning but feel you could use some more guidance?
 
This one-to-one refresher or follow-on session is designed for people who have some previous woodturning experience but don't necessarily feel ready to move on to more advanced work.
 
You may have completed a beginner lesson with me, taken a course elsewhere, bought your own lathe and discovered that things are harder without someone standing beside you, or simply be returning to woodturning after a long break.
 
We start with what you already know rather than assuming you are a complete beginner.
I’ll watch how you approach the lathe, identify areas that need improving and shape the session around the skills that will help you most.
 
🔧 What We Can Cover During Your Session
• Refresher on tool use – Revisit spindle gouges, roughing gouges, parting tools and other basic tools
• Tool presentation – Improve bevel contact, cutting angles and control
• Sharpening – Refresh your sharpening technique and understand what a properly sharpened tool should feel like
• Lathe setup & safety – Check your working habits and correct anything that may have slipped
• Chucking & workholding – Revisit 4-jaw chuck use, mounting methods and safe setup
• Problem solving – Work through areas where you regularly struggle
• Project work – Put your refreshed skills into practice by making a piece during the session
 
🎓 Ideal as a Second Woodturning Lesson
If you have already completed your first beginner lesson with me, this is an ideal next step.
 
Your first lesson introduces a lot of information in a relatively short period. A follow-on session gives us time to reinforce what you learned, correct any problems that have appeared and develop your technique further.
 
There is no fixed syllabus.
 
If one particular tool, cut or process is causing difficulty, we can spend more time on it.
 
🔄 Returning to Woodturning After a Break?
Perhaps you turned years ago but haven't used a lathe for some time.
 
You don't necessarily need to start again as a complete beginner.
 
This session lets us see what you remember, refresh the important fundamentals and rebuild your confidence at your own pace.
 
Quite often the knowledge is still there — it just needs bringing back.
 
🪵 Bought a Lathe but Struggling on Your Own?
A common problem after taking a first lesson is discovering that things don't feel quite as easy when you get home.
 
Tool presentation may feel different.
 
Sharpening may suddenly become confusing.
 
Cuts that worked during a lesson may not work quite as well without guidance.
 
Bring your questions and problems with you and we can work through them together.

• 4 hours – €160
• 5 hours – €190
Saturday Rates
• 3 hours – €160
• 4 hours – €200
• 5 hours – €260

Want to save a little and learn together?
If two of you are at roughly the same stage, the Two-Person Refresher Class can be a good-value option. Small differences in ability are usually no problem, and I can adjust the session as we go.
 
☕ Breaks & Catering
• 4-hour classes include 1 short coffee break
• 5-hour classes include 2 breaks
Bring a snack if attending a 5-hour session. I don't offer catering, but the kettle is always on.
