This private two-person refresher or follow-on woodturning session is aimed at people who already have some experience at the lathe but would benefit from more guided practice.

Perhaps you both completed a beginner lesson and would like a second session.

Maybe you have been teaching yourselves at home.

You might have turned years ago and want to get started again, or simply feel that there are gaps in your technique that are holding you back.

You don't need to describe yourselves as beginners.

We start from where you are now and build from there.

With only two students, I can watch both of you closely, identify different strengths and weaknesses and adjust the session accordingly.

👤 Why Private Refresher Tuition Works

With one-to-two tuition, we don't waste time covering things you already know. I can watch your technique closely, identify problems and concentrate on the areas where you actually need help.

You can also ask about your own lathe, tools, sharpening setup or future purchases — good advice before buying can save expensive mistakes.

Some courses run for around 8 hours, including up to 1.5 hours of scheduled breaks. My 4- and 5-hour sessions are deliberately shorter and more focused, with shorter breaks and very little waiting around. The aim is concentrated, useful tuition that you can take back to your own workshop and practise.

• Cutting technique – Revisit bevel contact, tool angles and cleaner cuts

• Sharpening – Refresh your sharpening technique and tool maintenance

• Workholding – Review safe mounting and 4-jaw chuck use

• Lathe setup – Correct setup or safety habits before they cause problems

• Individual difficulties – Each person can work on the areas they find most challenging

• Practical project work – Reinforce the techniques by making something during the session

🎓 A Natural Follow-On From Your First Lesson

One woodturning lesson can teach you a huge amount, but it is difficult to absorb everything at once.

Once you start practising, new questions appear.

You may realise that one particular cut isn't working.

Sharpening might become more difficult than expected.

Or you may simply want reassurance that you're practising the right techniques.

A follow-on session gives both of you another opportunity to practise with guidance beside you rather than trying to solve everything yourselves.

🔄 Returning After Time Away

If you both have previous woodturning experience but haven't turned for some time, there is no need to automatically book a complete beginner course.

We'll begin with the fundamentals, see what you remember and build the session from there.

One person may need more help with sharpening while the other needs to work on tool presentation or chucking.

That is perfectly fine.

The advantage of a private two-person session is that we can adapt as we go.

👥 Learn Together Without a Large Class

Large group classes inevitably have to move at a pace that suits everyone.

This is different.

With only two students, you both get plenty of individual attention while still having someone beside you to share the experience with.

It works particularly well for:

• Friends who have taken up woodturning together • Couples or family members who share a workshop • Two previous students returning for another lesson • Hobby turners who want to improve their technique • Two people returning to the craft after a break
