This is a dedicated one-to-one bowl turning class where we focus entirely on the techniques needed to shape, refine, and finish a hardwood bowl from start to near-completion.

Whether you’ve already done spindle work or you’re returning to develop your next skill, this class gives you my full attention and hands-on guidance throughout the process.
 
You’ll work in my professional workshop using high-quality tools and lathes in a safe, relaxed environment.

All timber blanks, finishes, and safety gear are provided.
By the end of your session, you’ll understand every stage of bowl turning—from blank preparation to final sanding—and take home a beautiful, handcrafted piece or one that’s ready to finish.
 
My lessons are informal but structured. If you have a specific goal or question, we’ll adapt as we go. That’s the benefit of genuine one-to-one teaching: we can follow your pace and interest, not a preset class schedule.
 
⚠️ Important Note:
To get the most from this class, you must have either:
• completed a regular woodturning tuition session with me, or
• already have a basic level of turning experience.
 
Bowl turning builds directly on spindle fundamentals. Without those basics, I’d end up doing most of the turning for you—and that’s not what this class is about.
 
Five hours might sound like plenty, but bowl turning takes time. We’ll go as far as we can in each session, and you’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to start or finish bowls on your own afterwards.

• Choosing the right wood and preparing the blank
• Tool selection and sharpening – bowl gouges, scrapers, and parting tools
• Safe mounting and chuck use for bowl projects
• Hollowing, shaping, and controlling grain direction
• Sanding sequences and surface preparation
• Finishing options – waxes, oils, or Hampshire Sheen
• Removing or refining the foot, depending on progress

🕐 Finishing Your Bowl
As my bowl class focuses on the process of turning a bowl from a blank—not necessarily completing one on the day—some students may not finish their piece within the 5-hour session.
We can discuss adding a little extra time for a small fee on the day if your bowl is far enough along, or you can book a short follow-up session to finish it and apply a protective coating.
Fees are simply based on what’s left to do and your ability level, so you’ll have a fair idea of the cost from the class you’ve just attended.
