🌳 A Bowl with a Story – Sourced from Killarney, Co. Kerry
This bowl began its journey in Beaufort, just outside Killarney, where a mature Beech tree was felled by storms in 2017. I harvested the wood myself—lifting each moisture-heavy blank by hand across a boggy field and over a ditch to reach my van. That effort lives in every curve of this piece.
 
🌿 The Beauty of Natural Beech Grain
Irish Beech is known for its subtle grain patterns, but this particular bowl features striking directional swirls and tonal variation that reflect the tree’s unique life. You’ll notice the wide rim’s undercut profile adds visual depth and texture—making it as much sculpture as it is serveware.
 
I’ve also highlighted a distinct section along the rim where the grain suddenly changes direction—a natural quirk in the tree’s growth that proved tricky to sand but adds a beautiful, eye-catching detail. It’s one of those small surprises that makes handcrafted woodturning truly special.

The bowl is sanded silky smooth and finished with a food-safe oil, making it practical for everyday use. Whether you choose to use it or simply display it, the natural character of the wood—including any minor marks from the tree’s life—is part of what makes it truly one of a kind.
