The Roughing Gouge is the first tool to use when spindle turning. It is used to conveniently take of the corners of the stock leaving it round ready for further work. (Not for bowl turning) The cutting profile of these tools are ground straight across making sharpening them easy to perform with a bevel of about 45°.

Please note that this tool has a factory edge and needs to be sharpened correctly to your specifications before being used.

Never to be used for roughing bowls or platters.
