Hamlet HCT066 Spindle Roughing Gouges for roughing down spindle blanks. This is a real hefty Tool and the largest Spindle Roughing Gouge that Hamlet produce. The Roughing gouge is always the first tool used in all my spindle work and I own 7 or 8 not including the tools I let my students use. Each size has a different purpose on both green or dry wood.
I now carry 4 sizes of Hamlet Roughing Gouges for sale.
The spindle roughing gouge also known as the roughing gouge. This tool should only be used for bringing a spindle blank to round. They’re not designed to rough down uneven logs with knotty branch outcroppings and should never be used on facework like bowls or platters.
Due to the design of the tool the large corners can catch, which in turn can bend the tang. With continual catches the bending of the tang will weaken the steel and then the tool could snap! When bringing logs or bowl blanks to round a bowl gouge should instead be used.
Hamlet spindle roughing gouges are made from high quality M2 HSS (high speed steel) which keeps it’s cutting edge.
Anyone who has ever used large roughing gouges will tell you they are far more comfortable for turning and are worth the extra money.
